Gina Barrett Putt
Working in community development, with a master's degree in sociology, Gina possesses a background in gerontology, housing, mental health, and in elementary education as well as experience teaching college-level social science courses.
Gina is interested in how we learn, in how we organize society, in how we treat the most vulnerable, in analyzing modern literature, and in historical and cross-cultural comparisons. She enjoys bringing together disparate ideas and presenting a coherent piece of writing. Her sociological training lends itself to an analytic, probing style of writing.
Her work on Suite 101.com includes articles on famous educators such as John Dewey and topics in psychology such as Jung and dreams, and an exploration of the promise of on-line collaboration. Her article "Mental Heuristics or Brain Short Cuts" was chosen for an Editor's Choice Award; her articles on psychological androgyny , Terry Prachett and Phillip K. Dick were featured on the website. Articles on the elderly draw on her experience working for an Area Agency on Aging. Her background in sociology informs her articles on demographics. Sometimes she writes just for fun; see her article on Victorian games. She indulges in poetry on Yahoo!
Her hobbies include ballroom dancing, hiking nature trails, practicing yoga, visiting art museums, participating in the Lions Club, and reading the classics and modern fiction. Anne Rice is one of her favorite authors. Her off line publications include a short story in The Flying Island and articles and poetry in student publications. She enjoys live theater, modern art, dark beer and sharp cheese. Her pets, rescued from shelters, provide comic relief.
